#TANOEFounderWrites – Entrepreneurship is like living a few years of your life like most people won’t so that you can spend the rest of your life like most people can’t!
Entrepreneurship as a word is fast becoming a cliche and buzz word especially now in Ghana and most parts of Africa. Entrepreneurship, seen as a solution to unemployment and economic development is being paid attention to now more than ever, which is a good thing. Unfortunately though, what it takes for one to be successful in their entrepreneurial quest is often times woefully understated and immensely underestimated.
Most people often hear about and desire the end results of successful entrepreneurs but are oblivious of the challenges they had to overcome, the compromises that had to make, the pain they had to endure, the sacrifices they had to make, the hours of work they had to and still put in, the betrayals and disappointments they have felt, the relationships they have lost, the depression they had to go through, the life changing lessons they had to learn, the money they have lost… just to mention a few.
If Successful Entrepreneurs especially in Africa would truly share their stories in detail, the decision to venture into entrepreneurship will not be made hastily. Being Self-Employed sounds cool. Being in charge of your time and deciding how you spend it, is fantastic. Waking up whenever you want and working whenever you decide to, is truly gratifying. Unfortunately though, Entrepreneurship gives you less freedom than desired.
Driven by a vision and passion with determination to build a legacy that will transcend generations, having bills and salaries to pay monthly whether the business is making money or not, attracting and making clients happy, dealing with distractions and the focusing on one thing with several other ideas and opportunities lurking around daily, reporting to board of directors and shareholders, dealing with government policies and ever changing global and local market dynamics, constantly evolving to stay competitive, attracting capital and deciding the right time to expand, learning and unlearning, taking feedback and constantly improving… all these can drive an entrepreneur crazy!
Indeed Entrepreneurship is like living a few years of your life like most people won’t so that you can spend the rest of your life like most people can’t! Without success in one’s entrepreneurial pursuit, the rewards of the struggle can not be fully enjoyed. It is worth noting though, that, it is the journey more than the destination that matters most. One intending to or currently in the pursuit of their entrepreneurship dreams, should by all means, work towards being successful but should learn to enjoy every step made on their journey.
